The site is located at 2 Hertsmere Road at the western end of the North Dock, also known as West India Quay. The site is currently occupied by the four storey Hertsmere House office building that was built in the 1980s.
This part of the Isle of Dogs is known as West India Quay and has a long history, as the site of one of London’s finest historical secure dock systems. It was named after the West Indies from where it would receive the delivery of tea and sugar.
The site lies partly within the West India Dock Conservation Area and is surrounded by several listed buildings such as the Museum of London and Canon Workshops.
The current Hertsmere House was built in the 1980s and has been used as offices ever since. A new development in West India Quay should reflect the heritage of the area and that has heavily influenced our new proposals.
The new Hertsmere House is envisioned by Greenland Group to be a landmark development. Greenland hopes to once again bring vitality to this site whilst being respectful of London’s rich and unique culture and built environment.
Currently the western part of the North Dock / West India Quay precinct lacks the vitality present in many others parts of the Dockside. This is an opportunity to make the most of the site and create a new place, through landscaped areas and retail uses and the ground floor animation required to bring vitality to the North Dock.
Our proposals will not only take into account the importance of the conservation area and its listed buildings and monuments but it will also enhance these assets by bringing new and improved public spaces to life.
